THE EMMETT TILL JUSTICE CAMPAIGN, INC. TIME LINE
December 12, 2002:
Alvin Sykes read an article about books and movie being made on Emmett till. In the article Mamie Till-Mobly, Emmetts mother, states that she has tried several to get the case reopened since 1956 with no success. Two filmmakers, Stanley Nelson of "The Murder of Emmett Till" and Keith Beauchamp of "Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till", declared that their research showed that there were additional people involved in Emmett's murder and they're still alive.
December 30, 2002:
Don Burger and Alvin Sykes of The Justice Campaign of America meets Mamie Till-Mobley in her home located in Chicago, Illinois to discuss Emmett Till's case and other Civil Rights era murders.
January 4, 2003:
Mamie Till- Mobley, Alvin Sykes, Don Burger, and Keith Beauchamp formed THE EMMETT TILL JUSTICE CAMPAIGN (ETJC). The ETJC's purpose is to seek a reopening of the Emmett Till case and possible solution for other cases. ETJC opens up lines of communication with both The Department of Justice and Mississippi State Law Enforcement officials by requesting a joint investigation into Emmett's death.
January 6, 2003:
Mamie Till-Mobley unexpectedly died of a heart attack.
THE YEAR OF 2003
At the request of ETJC, the Civil Rights Division of US Department of Justice opens a review of Emmett's case.
ETJC submits written request for review of the case supported by an opinion rendered by former Assistant Attorney General for legal affairs Antonin Sclalia, concerning the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Sykes, Burger, and Beauchamp, meets with the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights , Ralph Boyd, who declared that the 5 years of statue of limitations for Federal Criminal Civil Rights prosecutions in the Emmett Till case has expired. However, Boyd granted our request to ask the FBI to investigate the case and turn the results over to the state for possible murder prosecution.
Alvin Sykes, Simion Wright and Keith Beauchamp meets with U.S. Attorney Jim Greenlee, District Attorney Joyce Chiles, and FBI officials in Oxford, Mississippi.
THE YEAR OF 2004
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Right Acosta, announces joint Federal State investigation into Emmett Till's death. (May 10)
Federal and State investigators exhume Emmett's body and conduct an autopsy that confirms the identity of the body to be that of Emmett Till and recover other forensic artifacts.
Investigators find transcript from the 1955 Emmett Till murder trial.
Leflore County grand jury declines to indict Carolyn Bryant on Manslaughter charges due to insufficient evidence presented.
